Wire Shelves are widely used in industrial and commercial platforms and recently in residential use. Also known as wire decking or ventilated shelves
Wire flooring consists of wire mesh supported by metal supports and is intended for load bearing. The lattice is usually welded to the supports but can be attached in other ways as well. In commercial and industrial applications, wire mesh usually has a minimum wire gauge of 0.105 inch when using round wire. The most common shelf size is 42 inches deep and 46 inches wide, two such shelves placed side by side can often be combined to allow for a single 8 feet wide shelf. The weight capacity of the 42×46 rack ranges from 2,000 to 3,500 pounds, while the flooring itself weighs 24 to 30 pounds. The coating on the steel can be painted or sprayed or electroplated with zinc. Electroplating is more common with Chinese manufacturers, while painting or spraying is more common with American manufacturers. [2]
Wire shelving is used in a wide variety of commercial and home applications. It is frequently used in restaurant, food service and retail store applications because it stays clean and is resistant to rust and mold. It is also used by retailers in industrial applications and home kitchens. Wire racks are perfect in areas where fire prevention is emphasized because their open design allows sprinkler systems to work where solid racks can block water flow. [ citation required ]
Chromium-plated steel is much less expensive and is much less resistant to scratches and rust. Typical colors are chrome, white and black.
Wire shelving for industrial use consists of steel wire used for decking and steel sheets used for supports. Wire makes up about 60% by weight and steel sheet about 40%.
The coiled steel wire is cut to the correct lengths required using straight-cut machines. These individual wires are then fed through a welding machine that joins them using electrical resistance welding at each junction. It creates a continuous wire mesh that is then cut into required lengths.
Manufacturers receive pre-cut steel sheets for the required widths. The sheets are fed through a roll forming machine to form a “U” or “V” shape. The roll forming machine also cuts the supports to the required length.
After welding, the floor covering is coated with baked enamel or baked powder paint. This requires a cleaning process, heat drying, cooling, paint immersion followed by final curing. The floor covering can be electroplated with zinc instead.
Most manufacturers use the same equipment to produce other products. These include concrete reinforcement, mining, containers and other items made of steel mesh.
